Handling Your Jewelry Before A Storm

Posted on September 9, 2020

Inner Beauty

Last on anyone’s list after preparing homes, businesses, food, evacuation plans, watching weather updates, is jewelry or collectibles.

By the time you have a minute (IF you do), you are certainly experiencing a level of anxiety that makes it difficult to think.

However your collectibles as well as everyday pieces have sentiment, value, importance…

Should you carry your pieces out of town with you? Hide them in your home? Keep them at the bank? What was insured?

These are all questions very easy to handle ahead of time, but not at the time of storm preparations.

*APPRAISE YOUR JEWELRY

The value of your jewelry and gemstones can fluctuate greatly. If your last appraisal is over three years old it may be out-of-date and, as a result, your jewelry could be insured for less than its replacement value. That means you risk a substantial financial loss if your jewelry is lost, stolen or damaged. For your protection, we recommend you have your jewelry appraised every three years.

P.S – Most insurance companies will not remind you to update your appraisals.

*INSURE PIECES YOU WEAR EVERYDAY

That’s right! These are the pieces that have the highest risk of loss or damage. Your everyday pieces might include your Engagement Ring, Diamond band, stud earrings, and high end watches.

At Private Jewelers, we are fully insured and have clad-tight records of what’s in our care. We are happy to assist with your appraisal and insurance needs, or just some advice!
